Horizon 2020 will support a new strategic approach to innovation. The aim is to secure Europe's place as the world's most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy. The €80bn budget will be invested in tackling societal challenges, creating new jobs and helping to bridge the gap between research institutions and the commercial market. The financial framework should strengthen growth by providing a major simplification of the set of rules and removal of regulatory barriers to innovation and entrepreneurship. However, we know that the EU continues to lag behind the US in terms of commercialisation of ideas and new players have since emerged – such as China, Brazil and India – with quickly evolving and growing knowledge-based economies. In order to drive growth at EU level it is vital that innovation policy becomes more integrated and less fragmented and that a single market for research and innovative products is finally realised.
