Compared to previous generations, growing up in 21st Century Britain must seem an easy passage. The horrors of the workhouses and child labour facing the poor in Victorian times are now thankfully consigned to the pages of history and child welfare has become part of everyday society.

Modern times, however, still present many issues for some children and their families, making them vulnerable to risk. Poverty, neglect, abuse, sexual exploitation, homelessness and drug and alcohol misuse are just a few of the factors that contribute to condemning children into living with disadvantage and social isolation. Early experiences of these issues cast a long shadow over a child's future life chances.
