OVERVIEW

Supported by:
"I believe technology has an increasingly important role to play in helping to deliver transport policy objectives. I am committed to making best use of appropriate technologies, and to providing the necessary framework to enable and facilitate greater development and deployment of intelligent transport solutions. Your conference provides an excellent way of sharing the knowledge and experience gained to the betterment of all.

"I am of course especially pleased that this event will provide the opportunity to build on the extremely successful 2006 World ITS Congress in London which underlined the enormous ITS expertise in the UK.

"I offer you my best wishes for a successful and productive day." - Stephen Ladyman, Minister for Transport

Effective transportation systems are crucial for prosperity - socially, economically and environmentally. The UK transport system supports 61 billion passenger journeys and 250 billion tonne-kilometres of goods moved each year. Transport allows us to enjoy a diverse range of products and to holiday to far-reaching destinations. Consequently, any improvements in transportation systems are to the benefit of almost every business and individual in modern society. Conversely, anything that hinders the effective movement of people and goods and the development of cost-efficient, environmentally sound transportation is a considerable detriment.

There has been much said about overcoming administrative and organisational arrangements to develop safe, secure, efficient and highly mobile methods of transportation whilst at the same time reducing threats to the environment. Integrating Intelligent Transport Systems in order to deliver transport excellence represents a tremendous opportunity to progress to ensure that the technology becomes widely available. Government legislation and private sector innovation continue to further the development of ITS, and the UK Government is investing £9m in the new Future Intelligent Transport System (FITS) programme - bringing together university researchers and industry, with the ambition to stimulate new ideas, concepts, products and services that can improve safety, lead to greater efficiency in freight, improve road network management and provide better travel information.

PLENARY SESSION ONE:

The first plenary at Transport 07: ITS - Design and Delivery will look at the potential for ITS development and consider crucial questions - Do we need to, and how can we, create markets? What is scale of opportunity? What should be the focus areas? The session will consider the ITS role in the future productivity of the UK and Europe.

PLENARY SESSION TWO:

So how do we meet the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities presented by ITS? There is a clear need for closer links between Government and industry to optimise outcomes and take forward the ITS revolution. The second plenary looks at how the public sector and industry can work together to enable effective mobility for transport passengers.
