Chairman's Blog - Lindsey Colbourne, Commissioner, Sustainable Development Commission

SD 09 was as frustrating as watching Rolf Harris creating one of his drawings: when would we get the emerging picture of progress towards SD? Every now and then a tantalisingly clear thread would emerge from discussions: a passionate speech from the participants, a set of clear guidelines from one of the speakers, an inspiring call to action at one of the exhibition stands. We need a sense of urgency. A clearer set of messages. More creative communications. Mandatory carbon trading. A climate change war cabinet. Political leadership. Public leadership. Young people’s leadership. Co-creation of more effective policies. Conflict resolution. Better implementation of policies. A compelling vision. Action from national government. From the private sector. From local initiatives. From individuals. We heard inspiring examples of all of these things. And we heard anger at there not being enough.
