We all face challenges when looking into the future but none as ever present and global impacting as climate change and the sustainable development agenda. As a population, we now consume at a rate unsustainable by the planet on which we live.

"We can take pride in Scotland's natural heritage, which boosts our enjoyment of life. It also provides employment in forestry, fishing, agriculture, tourism, food and drink. But we cannot afford to take it for granted. If we continue to put too much strain on our environment, future generations won't be able to enjoy it as we do" (Environment Minister Michael Russell).

Choosing our Future: Scotland’s Sustainable Development Strategy’ was launched on 14th December 2005 and set out the vision of the future that was to be built upon to create a sustainable Scotland and put in place processes to secure the nation for future generations. One of these processes is the 10 Steps to a Greener Scotland. This campaign urges householders to pledge to any number of 10 recycling schemes, from turning the tap off whilst brushing your teeth, through to organising an environmental project in your local community.

It is with these strategies and campaigns in mind that ‘Sustainable Scotland: choosing our future’ has been convened, to be hosted by Public Service Events at Dynamic Earth on 11th September. Sustainable Scotland will focus on both policy and delivery, with our morning plenary assessing the legislation surrounding sustainability, analysing the progress to date – how Scotland as a nation has fared since the Strategy launch in 2005, and more importantly, the advancements made within the renewables field. Scotland already stands out as a world leader, creating 16% of electricity through renewables; added to this is the announcement of the Saltire Prize and the opportunity to award one of the biggest international innovation prizes in history of some £10m for advances in clean energy. Our afternoon session will focus on the next stage – delivering real results and practical action on the Government’s high hopes for sustainable development, and how the world is looking at Scotland with high hopes.
