The 21st Century digital explosion has resulted in an unprecedented pace of change in learning methods. The experiences and aspirations of learners are changing too as resources become more accessible, whether from the home, the workplace or on the move. Thanks to the combination of broadband, next generation mobile phones, cheaper laptops and tablet computers, and e-learning is being brought into the mainstream.

The ability to learn has been transformed by accessibility to online information. Information and Communication Technologies that already support learning include interactive whiteboards in the classroom, personal learning environments, wireless networks and mobile devices, and high-quality digital learning resources. New tools are helping learning become more interactive, more personalised, and, ultimately, more efficient. Technology platforms and software are also helping to increase collaborative, social and informal learning activities. Innovative learning methods, such as cloud-based learning environments (CLEs), are helping to open up the learning process, away from the more conventional or traditional education methods, allowing learners equal opportunity to control, share and collaborate.

In November 2011, the European Commission produced 'The Future of Learning: Preparing for Change' report. This report stressed that a fundamental transformation of education and training throughout Europe is needed, not only to maintain existing levels of education and training in the population, but also to develop the new skills and competences required for Europe to remain competitive and grasp new economic opportunities. Using existing learning trends and drivers, the report highlighted how personalisation, collaboration and informalisation (informal learning) will be at the core of future learning. These terms are not new in education and training, but they will have to become the central guiding principle for organising learning and teaching in the future.

The learning landscape is far more complex than ever before, and to achieve the best results, organisations need to gain a better understanding of how people learn and set out learning strategies that are aligned with training and development goals.
