Approximately a quarter of us will experience a mental health problem during our lifetime at a cost to the economy of an estimated £105bn – more than the entire NHS budget. The personal costs can be equally devastating though often unquantifiable: people with severe mental illness are more likely to be victims of violent crime, have poor physical health, and have a life expectancy up to 25 years shorter than that of the general population.
