Recent decades have seen a dramatic increase in healthy life expectancy across Europe and the rest of the world. However, there has also been a corresponding rise in age related diseases such as dementia. More than seven million Europeans are affected by dementia, and its prevalence, cost and profound impact on society has led to its being made a public health priority for EU member states.

The UK is aiming to become a leading light in Europe for quality of dementia services. David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, has announced he will use the country's G8 Presidency to encourage a new international approach on dementia research.

Dementia Europe: sharing best practice will focus on the need for action in Europe and around the world, drawing on examples from countries leading the agenda in dementia care and research. This is a unique opportunity for health and social care professionals, researchers, service providers, and those leading public services across Europe to come together to share their experiences.
