In recent years there have been dramatic changes in our society and the need for efficient and comprehensive policing is as acute as ever. For the Police Forces to remain effective law enforcers, they have to adapt to 21st century pressures. On 3rd April 2008, Public Service Events will host Modernising Policing: Meeting the Challenges of the Future. The event will explore methods by which constabularies can efficiently progress in their use of innovation.

On 12 September 2007, Sir Ronnie Flanagan presented the interim report of his review of the police service to the Home Secretary. The report outlined four key issues to be tackled:
• Reduction of bureaucracy and promotion of better business processes
• Sustaining the progress that has been made on neighborhood policing
• Ensuring that the public are driving local policing priorities
• Management of resources effectively to deliver on the tough challenges of the coming years
Our event will debate the methods by which the police force can face the challenges set out by Flanagan’s report.

The police’s task of protecting communities across the country has been subject to shifting priorities since the start of the millennium, with an increased focus on tackling anti-social behaviour at one end of the scale, and counter-terrorism as well as continued concern over drugs and serious organised crime at the other.

In this context, our conference will revisit the various government strategies to address the problems facing police forces as they modernise, and consider their role in the wider modernisation agenda. Significant progress has already been made in Police improvement, with overall occurrences of crime cut by a third over the last decade. However for crime prevention to be continuingly successful forces must keep up with the pace of societal change. The equipment police officers use and workforce practices implemented must be reviewed for forces to adequately move forward.

The morning plenary session will look at the government’s priorities and latest challenges faced by the 57 police forces across the country, as well as the technological innovations that are available to aid them in the exercise of ever day duties. The afternoon session will take a more specific look at how to maximise operational effectiveness.
