“Building dementia-friendly communities”
How do we overcome the stigma and misunderstanding surrounding dementia throughout society as a whole? Partnership working and community responsibility is certainly part of the answer and we are now seeing many communities becoming dementia friendly. However, a major shift in opinion is required amongst both professionals and the wider population if people living with dementia and their carers are to receive the respect and dignity they deserve. Faith leaders and groups have a crucial role in community engagement and in offering knowledge and support, and schools and colleges also have a key role in creating a dementia-friendly generation for the future through the education of children and young people.
