“Tackling health inequalities – what progress since the Marmot Review?”
The Marmot Review, 'Fair Society, Healthy Lives', set out recommendations on how to reduce health inequalities across England. The 2011 public health white paper and outcomes framework that followed put the reduction of health inequalities at the centre of its public health strategies and aims. Although national and local responses to the recommendations have been encouraging, health inequalities continue to widen as austerity and the economic climate bite. How can new commissioning and health and wellbeing boards drive a reduction in health inequalities and deliver innovative approaches?

“Meeting complex needs, tackling local problems”
The NHS is facing increasing demographic pressures; people are living longer and their needs are often complex and costly. For our health system to remain sustainable, a new approach is needed and local authorities will have a crucial role in making a difference. In order to meet these challenges, encouraging people to make healthier lifestyle choices and preventing ill health at an earlier stage will be absolutely key.

“Local action: tackling obesity and related conditions”
The prevention of obesity is a major public health challenge. One-quarter of women (24%) and just over one-fifth of men (22%) in the UK are now classed as obese, meaning Britain now has the highest rate of obesity in Europe. Obesity is associated with health problems that include Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. A new approach is needed to help to tackle the causes and consequences of excess weight and help support individuals to make healthier lifestyle choices.

“Rethinking Alcohol”
Alcohol is the second biggest risk factor for cancer after smoking and remains a huge problem with over 10 million adults drinking more than recommended guidelines. Alcohol related harms cost the NHS £3.5bn and alcohol related crime is estimated to cost £11bn a year. The Alcohol Strategy published in March last year recommended a number of measures, including minimum unit price, but what else can be done to tackle alcohol related harm?
