James Barlow is a Professor of Technology and Innovation Management at the Imperial College Business School. He is co-director of the EPSRC's Health and Care Infrastructure Research and Innovation Centre (HaCIRIC, www.haciric.org) and an executive member of the Northwest London CLAHRC (www.clahrc-northwestlondon.nihr.ac.uk). His research focuses on the implementation and sustainability of innovation in healthcare. He is currently part of the Department of Health's team evaluating its Whole System Demonstrators remote care programme. He has been a member of expert panels on healthcare innovation issues for the Dept of Trade and Industry, Dept of Health, OFCOM, Welsh Assembly Government, European Commission, Royal Society, King's Fund and Policy Exchange. He has also worked with companies involved in healthcare technologies, including Orange, BT Health, Philips, and Tunstall.

A critical care nurse by profession, Lynne now leads work on innovation specifically focusing on the design and redesign of health services to improve quality and efficiency within the NHS. She has a particular focus in translating learning from service design and other industries to inspire the NHS. Her work has resulted in a number of products being widely used in the NHS including:

• Thinking Differently - a book designed specifically for front line NHS teams who want to achieve transformational change.
• Experience Based Design - a ground breaking method of co-designing health services with patients based upon their actual experience of the service provided.
• Creating the Culture for Innovation - designed to support senior leaders to develop a culture for innovation within their organisations.
• High Impact Changes for Nursing and Midwifery - the first nationwide survey for Nurses and Midwives providing evidence of existing practice to increase quality and safety while reducing cost then using campaign methods to achieve wide scale spread and adoption.
• Making a Bigger Difference - a guide for NHS front line staff and leaders and a companion guide for Commissioners on assessing and stimulating service innovation.
• NHS Sustainability Model and Guide - developed to increase the likelihood of sustainability of improvements. This is the first of its kind and has been adopted nationally and internationally.
• Innovation Practitioner Programme - a six month programme designed to help front line staff to apply innovation to improve the services they deliver.

Lynne is a Fellow at the Health Service Management Centre, Birmingham University and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She is an advisory board member for the Design Council and is also part of the faculty for Kaiser Permanente's Improvement Leaders Course, USA.

The NHS Institute are committed to promoting the value of healthcare innovation and service design, which have a major role to play in improving patient care. The QIPP programme, aiming to achieve savings of £15-£20bn in the next four years, demands radical innovation to produce a more efficient and productive NHS.

Christine is the first Chief Information Officer for Health and will focus on developing and delivering the Department's overall information strategy and integrating leadership across the NHS. She took up post in September 2008.

Christine was CIO at Cadbury Schweppes from May 2004 to September 2007.

Prior to joining Cadbury Schweppes, Christine worked in various global roles at BP. Her career included the senior IT position for both the Exploration & Production and Refining & Marketing businesses as well as leadership roles in Business Simplification, Technology, Innovation, Internal Audit and General Management. Her last position in the company was as Chief of Staff for the Gas, Power & Renewables business.

Christine was born in Scotland and has a degree in Computer Science from Aberdeen University.

The "Information Revolution" is about transforming the way information is accessed, collected, analysed, and used, putting people at the heart of health and adult social care services. Effective data management has been identified as an important route towards improving patient outcomes, boosting efficiency and productivity.

Bill Buchanan is a Professor in the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University, and a Fellow of the BCS and the IET. He currently leads the Centre for Distributed Computing, Networks, and Security, and works in the areas of security, next generation user interfaces, Web-based infrastructures, e-Health, mobile computing, and agent-based systems. Bill has one of the most extensive academic sites in the World, and is involved in many areas of novel research and teaching in computing. He has published over 27 academic books, and over 120 academic research papers, along with awards for excellence in knowledge transfer, and for teaching. Presently he is working with a range of industrial/domain partners, including with the Scottish Police, health care professionals and the FSA. As part of the drive to create a World-leading infrastructure for security and cybercrime, he leads the Scottish Centre of Excellence for Security and Cybercrime which bring together a wide range of collaborators, including most of the universities in Scotland, the Scottish Police, the public sector, and a range of SMEs and large organisations. He has a long track record in commercialisation activities, including being a co-founder of Inquisitive System, which has progressed from PhD work to a university spin-out. This spin-out has also involved patenting novel security software in three countries around the World. His current work includes a collaboration with Microsoft plc on a £2million project which aims to improve the care of the elderly using Trusted Cloud-based services, and with Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on a next generation Health Care platform.

Presentation: A next generation Cloud-based health care platform

This presentation outlines a novel Cloud-based e-Health Platform which integrates security within every single transaction. It involves a TSB/EPSRC funded project with Edinburgh Napier University, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, and a number of collaborators. The presentation shows how data is captured from the clinical environment, and how this is used to fill patient-centric data buckets, which are then used to provide well-managed clinical services, such as for an EWS (Early Warning Score).

David obtained his Ph.D. in Clinical Biochemistry from the University of Leeds carrying out research in the department of Medical Physics and the MRC Mineral Metabolism Unit at Leeds General Infirmary. He initially worked as a scientific advisor to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) before moving into marketing with Hewlett-Packard in Germany. Subsequently he has worked internationally in a variety of senior and Board level marketing, business development and general management positions in multinational and start-up companies in the biotechnology, medical and IT industries including Quadrant Healthcare, LION Bioscience and Iomega. In 2003, David returned to the UK and has worked in private and public sector change management and organizational development, including the formation of Skills for Justice for the UK's Government's Home Office. David founded NHS Innovations London in 2005 and subsequently founded ATcare Ltd. the UK's first Assistive Technology Design & Development Centre and Xpedite Ventures Ltd. a fund management company authorized and regulated by the Financial Services Authority. He also established the novel concepts for the Xpedite Innovations Management process and the Xcelerate Health Outcomes Unit at NHSIL. David is a member of the UK Government's EPSRC Digital Economy Advisory Board, the Board of the Health Innovations Alliance Ltd. and the NHS R&D Forum.

Penny is currently working with the Technology Strategy Board overseeing the organisation's Innovation Platform on the Detection and Identification of Infectious Agents.

Penny has spent over 20 years in the Diagnostics Industry in a variety of senior technical and strategic roles. In recent years Penny has focused on point-of-care (POC)/rapid diagnostic systems, from both a technical and societal perspective, and on stratified healthcare and personalised medicine. Her expertise spans human, animal and plant diagnostics and she has considerable expertise in assessing the diagnostic and healthcare needs in both the developed and developing world.

Appointments have included Senior Director of Advanced Technology Development for a company developing a POC diagnostic system for the doctor's office and Director of Technology Assessment and Acquisition for Diagnostic Products Corporation (now part of Siemens Healthcare). Penny established BioZenix Ltd in 2008.

Penny has a degree in Medicinal & Pharmaceutical Chemistry and a PhD in Breast Cancer Biochemistry.

James Munro is Director of Research and Informatics at Patient Opinion. He worries endlessly about data models, site usability and uptime, and carries a notebook listing endless new features to add to the website. Some of these will actually appear. James has a background in clinical medicine, public health and health services research, and recently stepped down from a 20 year stint editing the independent health policy magazine healthmatters . He was lured away from a promising academic research career at Sheffield University by the bright lights of Web 2.0, and the emerging possibilities for new forms of engagement by citizens in their public services - especially the NHS, which we all want to be as good as it could be.

Originally trained as a molecular pathologist, Nigel Sansom graduated from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland before completing his doctorate in an animal health discipline. He then joined the pharmaceutical industry with Zeneca, and then with Novartis.

Nigel spent three years with NHS Innovations South East advising NHS trusts in Surrey and Sussex in the areas of intellectual property, licensing and commercialisation of technology.

He is now a senior manager at the NHS National Innovation Centre, an organisation based in London at the Department of Health, focused on identifying, developing and increasing the uptake of new technology in the NHS. He has expertise in intellectual asset management and strategic finance and advises a number of companies that have potential technology solutions to healthcare needs.

Uwe Buddrus is Managing Director of HIMSS Analytics Europe (HAE), a German-based company, to provide health care organizations, governments and information technology companies extensive data resources and services about the adoption and use of healthcare information technology in Europe.

HIMSS' acquisition of assets from Hospital-IT.net and data information intelligence (dii) served as the foundation of HIMSS Analytics Europe, and Uwe Buddrus, partner in Hospital-IT.Net and dii, is responsible for the development of a new portfolio of products and services for the European health care market.

His long standing experience in strategic business development and a leading role as managing consultant for many projects in the healthcare imaging and IT sectors contribute greatly to bringing together world-class research and analytics with profound European experience and the most extensive database of Hospital IT adoption in Europe.
