| Cleanliness put to the test at hospital |

Visitors to George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton put their clean hands to the test as part of a drive to cut cases of hospital bugs.
Infection control staff set up an information stall in the hospital foyer to show visitors and patients the benefits of making sure their hands are clean.
Clean hands can help avoid spreading the dreaded hospital superbug MRSA, stomach upsets, and even coughs and colds which could prove fatal to someone who is already seriously ill in hospital.
And as well as getting advice on how to ensure they do not bring in anything nasty when visiting their loved ones, people were also able to see for themselves if their hand-washing technique was up to scratch by using an ultraviolet "glow box".
Visitors were invited to put a special solution on their hands, wash them, and then put them in the box to see if they had washed thoroughly enough to remove all the solution. If they had not, it glowed under the UV light.Infection control nurse June Woodcock, who was running the stall, said: "What we're trying to do is put a bit of fun into something which is actually very important.
"Hand washing is very important because infection spreads via hands, and, if we can encourage the public as well as staff to wash their hands, it will help eliminate infection." |
