| City set to launch bid for PFI road revamp |
|
A bid for millions of pounds of Government money is expected to be made by Sheffield Council for a plan which would allow it to overhaul the city's neglected road network.
Ministers are offering cities the chance to bid for part of a £600m fund under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI), which would bring in more investment than the council can expect from conventional sources.
If the council's cabinet goes ahead with the bid and it succeeds, the aim would be to bring the entire road network up to standard within 10 years.
Council leader Jan Wilson said:
"The people of Sheffield have told me that the state of the roads must be improved and we have been working hard to identify ways of tackling the problem.
"This scheme is ambitious and gives us a chance to sort this issue out. If successful, Sheffield would get approximately £300m to ensure all roads are up to standard within 10 years."
Many Sheffield schools are being replaced under PFI, which involves private firms building the premises then renting them to the council over 25 years before they revert to council ownership.
A similar system would be operated for the repair and maintenance of all the city's roads, pavements, bridges and grass verges which are currently the council's responsibility.
Bids have to be in to the Government by September and the successful schemes should be announced by the end of the year. |
