| £700 million PFI funding boost for local authority street lighting |
|
Additional Government investment has been made available for better, brighter street lighting which it is hoped will improve road safety and reduce crime and the fear of crime.
Fifteen local authorities in England will be able to use £694 million of Private Finance Initiative funding to install modern street lighting and upgrade their existing service.
Transport Minister Gillian Merron said:
"Better lighting means a reduction in crime and the fear of crime, less light pollution and a safer, more user-friendly night time environment for everyone. I am very pleased that local authorities are using this Private Finance Initiative funding to deliver real benefits to drivers and pedestrians alike.
"Partnerships like this provide a framework for investment in much-needed improvements in our local public services and communities."
Following the submission of an Expression of Interest the following local authorities will now be asked to prepare an outline business case for a PFI street lighting scheme. Once this is approved by the Department and the Interdepartmental Project Review Group, the local authorities will start their procurement process:
