| Wragges signs off set-piece £1.2bn PFI project with MoD |
|
Redevelopment of Northwood Headquarters is the latest in string of deals with MoD
Wragge & Co has sewn up one of its largest-ever deals for longstanding client the Ministry of Defence (MoD), with the Birmingham giant advising on a £1.2bn PFI project in north London.
The Midlands-based firm first received the mandate in 1997 to advise on the deal, which was signed last month. The deal involves the launch of a 25-year contract for the redevelopment of the Northwood Headquarters agreed with Eastbury Park, a joint venture between Carillion Private Finance and HSBC Infrastructure Fund Management.
The project will include the refurbishment of offices, facilities and accommodation at the 43-acre north London site, which houses a private bunker for the Prime Minister. Work is expected to be completed by 2011.
Birmingham-based projects partner Michael Whitehouse and PFI associate Tony Cheema led the team for Wragges alongside HR partner Patrick Brodie and construction associate Maxine Symington.
Whitehouse said: "We have been keeping very busy in the projects sector [and] it may sound boring, but we do get lots of top-end repeat work from the clients we get on well with."
Denton Wilde Sapte project finance partner Dominic Spacie and associate Peter Shaw acted for Eastbury. Norton Rose projects partner Martin McCann acted for Irish bank DEPFA, the senior debt funder to the Eastbury consortium.
The MoD is now one of Wragges’ biggest clients and the firm was also reappointed to the Government department’s formal roster of advisers after a review last year.
The 111-partner firm is also advising the MoD on a £3bn project to design and build two new aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy.
During the past 12 months Wragges has also advised the MoD on the £220m development of a new accommodation centre for 1,650 Royal Navy personnel at HM Naval Base Devonport and on a successful claim against Thames Water, challenging the legality of its charging system. |
