| Tackling hospital Superbug by degrees |

Health workers are being offered a university course on how to tackle the deadly "superbug" MRSA and control killer infections like meningitis and E-coli food poisoning.
It is the latest in a number of courses on offer to health professionals as MRSA and other outbreaks of infection continue to cause concern about infection in our hospitals, care homes, schools and doctors' surgeries.
A new advanced course at Swansea University aims to play a key role in preparing practitioners to do battle with the lethal infections.
MSc Advanced Clinical Practice - Infection Control is a part-time course designed for health professionals, which begins in October 2006.
The course will look at some basic ways of stopping the spread of infection, including washing hands, isolation (separating patients with infections from others) and following special cleaning protocols.
The course is also designed to tackle the underlying and long-term changes needed, including the management of clinical situations, educating professionals and research into causes of infection and their solutions.
Dr John Gammon, Senior Lecturer in the School of Health Science at Swansea University, said yesterday, "The management of infections and infectious diseases with any healthcare facility is absolutely vital for the protection of patients, the public, healthcare workers and society as a whole." |
