Cleaning taskforce to clear up new hospital
Hospital chiefs have ordered extra cleaners for the city's new University Hospital after a flood of complaints from patients.

The £400 million hospital opened its doors in July and patients soon started to report problems with cleaning. Now ISS Mediclean, the company contracted to clean the hospital, has conceded it underestimated the number of staff needed for the job and has recruited an extra 140 staff, bring the total number of cleaners at the hospital to nearly 500.

David Roberts, chief executive of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, apologised to patients and visitors who were concerned about the standard of cleanliness at the hospital.

"It became clear very quickly we had a problem due to the increased size of the new hospital compared to Walsgrave," Mr Roberts said.

"Our infection control is among the best in the country - however, if this is to continue it is essential we have the right standards and frequency of cleaning.

"After talking to our matrons on the wards it is evident improvements have been made," he added.

"We will be monitoring the improvements very carefully and taking further action if we are not satisfied."

The hospital now has rapid response cleaning teams to tackle spillages 24 hours a day, while the extra staff mean the hospital's toilets, wards and emergency department can be cleaned more frequently.

Simon Cox, managing director of ISS Mediclean, said extra supervisors had been taken on to co-ordinate the cleaning.
"We apologise for not meeting the expectations of patients and visitors and we acknowledge we had some teething problems linked to the move which regrettably led to some patient complaints," he added.

"We have taken immediate action to put this right."
