| Hospital says MRSA under control |
|
Hospital bosses in Notts have rejected criticism from health campaigners after a rise in the number of MRSA cases.
The number of instances of the severest kind of the so-called "superbug" more than tripled at King's Mill Hospital between December and March.
Campaigners have questioned the statistics, but officials said the rise - from two to seven cases each month - coincided with a very busy period.
They also highlighted a longer term decline in the number of infections.
Health campaigner Moya Stephenson, who survived the infection, said: "I don't think the figures show the true picture at all.
"In any trust it is only mandatory to report blood borne infections which is only a tiny minority MRSA cases within any trust."
Director of Infection Prevention and Control, Carolyn White insisted they were doing all they could to tackle every type of MRSA.
"There are more patients that have MRSA in terms of natural skin flora and do not demonstrate any individual problems but do pose a risk of cross infection to other patients.
"It is important we reinforce with our hospital staff the message of clean hands, using aprons in the appropriate way and understanding good infection control practices," she said.
There have been 49 recorded cases of MRSA at King's Mill in Sutton-in-Ashfield during the past 12 months - down from 61 last year. |
