Bernard Donoghue took up the position of Director of ALVA in September 2011 following a career in advocacy, communications and lobbying, latterly at a senior level in the tourism and heritage sector.
He was Head of Government and Public Affairs for VisitBritain, the national tourist board between 1997 and 2010. He was a Board Director of Marketing Manchester, 2001-2010, and Chairman of VisitManchester, the Manchester tourist board, 2008-2010. He was Co-Chair of British Tourism Week, 2008-2010. He is an appointed member of the Cathedral Council of St Paul's Cathedral, London, a Trustee and Fellow of the Tourism Society, and a Trustee of 'Kids in Museums'.
He is a founder Trustee and Director of the Kaleidoscope Trust; a Trustee of Centrepoint, the youth homelessness charity and Chair of Centrepoint's Marketing, Communications and Policy Committee; a Fellow and Trustee of the World Wide Fund for Nature UK, Chair of WWF-UK's 50th Anniversary Taskforce 2010 - 2012 and Chair of WWF-UK's Council of Ambassadors since 2011. He is Chairman of the London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT), having been a Board member since 2005 and Deputy Chair since 2007. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts (FRSA), a Fellow of the Tourism Society (FTS), Fellow of WWF-UK, a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (MCIPR) and lives in London.

The Association of Leading Visitor Attractions seeks to represent to government, the tourism industry, the media and the public, the views and achievements of the country's foremost visitor attractions in matters that concern the effectiveness of UK tourism, whilst promoting cooperation and high standards of visitor management among its members.

Marketing Director, VisitBritain

In September 2009, Laurence took up the role of Marketing Director for VisitBritain, the national tourism agency. In this role, he is responsible for the £125m global 'GREAT Britain' marketing campaign – the largest ever promotion of the UK – in 21 countries across the globe. VisitBritain is now perceived as one of the leading tourism organisations in the fields of digital and social media marketing, PR and image advertising.
Laurence previously held the role of Regional Director, Europe with strategic responsibility for VisitBritain's operations and marketing in 18 countries. Before that he held the position of General Manager of England Marketing at VisitBritain, in which capacity he led the 20-strong team responsible for the marketing of England to the British and in key European markets. The role involved all aspects of through-the-line marketing, the development of the suite of enjoyEngland.com websites and VisitBritain's tourist information centre strategy.
Laurence has worked in senior communications and marketing roles for the last 15 years, starting at food retailer Safeway Stores plc. Later he moved to the British Tourist Authority in the role of Head of Campaigns where he was responsible for global marketing. He then worked in a business-to-business capacity as the Head of Marketing for the UK's leading e-learning agency, Epic Group plc, where he also provided online marketing consultancy to some of the UK's top 100 plc's.
Before taking on marketing roles, Laurence worked as a journalist for London Weekend Television and several national newspapers.

Visitors build cognitive, emotional and aesthetic representations of a destination before they visit. How can branding and marketing techniques be effectively implemented to shape these preconceptions and make an area an attractive prospect for a large demographic? How can individual destinations retain a sense of distinctness whilst yet cohering with the Great Britain brand?
